The Gay Marriage Campaign and the Despotism of Conformism

May 08, 2013 by Dr. Jeff Robinson
By Justin Taylor The Gay Marriage Campaign and the Despotism of Conformism Journalist Brendan O’Neill, who is an atheist (in terms of religion) and a libertarian (in terms of politics), recently wrote about “the peculiar non-judgmental tyranny of the gay-marriage campaign, which judges harshly those who dare to judge how people live.” He writes, “Opponents of gay marriage are now treated by the press in the same way queer-rights agitators were in the past: as strange, depraved creatures, whose repenting and surrender to mainstream values we await with bated breath.” He thinks this

Jackie Robinson and the beauty of the Gospel in real life

May 01, 2013 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Jim Crow began to die a slow, stubborn and protracted death in America on April 15, 1947. On that day, Jack Roosevelt “Jackie” Robinson took the field as the starting first basemen for the Brooklyn Dodgers in the team’s season opener against the Milwaukee Braves. On that day, Robinson became the first black man to play in a Major League baseball game. On that day, the curtain that had barred hundreds of talented baseball players from participating in big leagues on the basis of skin pigmentation was torn in two.

3801 Lancaster: Mind-boggling and deeply tragic

April 16, 2013 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Some of you may have heard the horrific story that has emerged out of a Philadelphia abortion mill operated by the butcher/madman also known as Dr. Kermit Gosnell. The video link below will access a powerful and horrendous expose of Gosnell's shop of abortion horrors, unveiled when FBI and detectives raided the clinic in February of 2010. What you will see is almost unthinkable and illustrates that holocaust going on in the abortion mills that murder 5,000 children per day in this country.

Are we man-centered or God-centered?

April 12, 2013 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

By the very definition of their new identity, a Christian must be a God-centered being. If you ar in Christ, it’s what happened at regeneration: God took your heart and changed it so that you no longer love and long for your glory supremely, but are now enabled to love God’s glory and seek it supremely. This is the way a genuine Christian ought to increasingly think and live. Why?

Why did Jesus come to die? (Part II)

March 29, 2013 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Today, Good Friday, we mark the day the central act in human history began to unfolded, the events that separate B.C. from A.D.: Jesus Christ, after he was found guilty of trumped up charges by a kangaroo court, was nailed to the cross at the hands of sinful men.

But why? Why did he suffer so much? Why did he come and die? For whom did he die and what does this have to do with me and what does it all mean? The men on the road to Emmaus in Luke 24 grappled with the same questions in the wake of our Lord’s first Advent nearly 2000 years ago.

Why did Jesus come to die?

March 27, 2013 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Why did Jesus Come to Die? Inevitably the mainstream news media asks the same question twice each year during Christmas and Easter: Who is Jesus and why did He come? For followers of Christ, Holy Week is the most important week of the year for it celebrates the central event in human history, the even which delineates the way we divide the ages B.C. from A.D.—the death and resurrection of the Messiah promised in the Old Testament.

Tolle Lege: Two new works on Covenant Theology in its Baptist expression

March 22, 2013 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

One of the theological questions I have been asked most often during my first 24 months as pastor at PBC (Yes, it has been that long!) has been some version of this query: Do Baptists believe Covenant Theology or is that just a Presbyterian thing? My answer (which is consistently “Yes, Baptists have historically believed Covenant Theology”) has puzzled some and made others curious enough to launch your own study of my conclusion.

Cultivating a Gracious Climate in the Church

March 08, 2013 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

[NOTEBelow is an excellent blog on cultivating a gracious climate in the local church body. This is precisely what the elders are aiming to see take root and grow here at PBC. Since we believe a theology of grace, we must also be typified by graciousness in our lives together here at PBC. Jared Wilson's article, which appeared today on the Gospel Coalition blog, hits the bull's eye. May it please God to make PBC a body that is truly the "church of brotherly love."--Pastor Jeff]

When darkness becomes light and light becomes darkness

February 27, 2013 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

What happens when a nation begins to love and embrace what God hates and rejects? What happens when such thinking infiltrates the church? The Israelites learned the answer to this vital question the hard way: God poured out his judgment on his ethnic people for their veneration of idols and their intermarrying with the pagans of the surrounding cultures. The prophet Isaiah in 5:20-23 pronounced a woe on God’s people when they wander away from the fold of God and lose the needle on their moral compass such that darkness becomes light and light darkness:

Tolle Lege: The Juvenilization of American Christianity

February 22, 2013 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Pop worship music. Falling in love with Jesus. Mission trips. Wearing jeans and T-shirts to church. Spiritual searching and church hopping. Faith-based political activism. Seeker-sensitive outreach. These now-commonplace elements of American church life all began as innovative ways to reach young people, yet they have gradually become accepted as important parts of a spiritual ideal for all ages. What on earth has happened?

How to stop church-killing gossip

February 15, 2013 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Gossip is a deadly poison in a local church. So deadly, in fact, is this cancer, Paul includes it among many of the catalogs of sin that populate his New Testament epistles. And gossip is like kudzu along North Georgia roads: it is everywhere, in every church.

Women in combat: Another deadly cultural earthquake

January 28, 2013 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

By now most of you are aware that our government last week lifted the ban on women serving in combat. Along with the genocide of 50 million dead babies in the wake of Roe v. Wade and the wholesale redefinition of marriage and gender presently afoot in our nation, this news is nothing less than another devastating cultural earthquake that threatens to shake our culture from its foundations. The Bible makes clear that when women go to war, society has reached a treacherously low ebb.

The devil's in the distractions

January 04, 2013 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Missionary and martyr Jim Elliott (1927-1956) may have been slightly ahead of his time when he wrote: “The devil has made it his business to monopolize on three elements: noise, hurry, crowds . . . Satan is quite aware of the power of silence.” Hard to believe, but Elliott penned those words long before the advent of the omnipresent Internet, before the ubiquitous presence of the smart phone, decades previous to the invention of time-swallowing social media such as Facebook and Twitter.

Looking forward by looking back: A year-in-review of the heart

December 31, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Below is an excerpt from post-Puritan era Puritan pastor James Smith's diary.  Smith penned it on the final day of 1855. Taken from today's Grace Gems e-mail devotional, Smith's thougths represent an excellent example of biblical mediation and self-examination.  Free from frothy sentimentality, Smith's words are the fruit of deep theological and biblical reflection.  I commend it and the prayer that follows to you as a model of substantive,self-aware biblical reflection.

Eighth mark of a healthy church member: A healthy church member is a growing disciple

December 07, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

You plant an apple tree. You water it regularly, you fertilize it, you prune it and you make certain that it receives plenty of sunlight. It grows into a full-grown tree in terms of size, but something is wrong: it does not bear any apples. Eventually, the leaves begin to turn brown and the limbs appear to be withering. Ultimately, there is only one conclusion you can draw: the roots are dead. This tree is not a living, healthy plant. So it is with the Christian faith.

Fighting with God in sanctification

August 08, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

By Tony Reinke

[Note: This post was originally published on Desiring God's blog--CJR]

Puritan writers like John Owen are well-known for teaching Christians to pursue holiness and kill sin. This is helpful, but Puritans like Owen also recognized that this can also lead to a serious misunderstanding on the part of Christians. In the pursuit of holiness, Christians are tempted to dwell too much on their own sins and forget the kindness of their Heavenly Father.

Tolle Lege: The angry Calvinist

July 13, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Note: The following review is from my dear friend Tom Ascol, head of Founders Ministries. It is a book all we who cherish Reformed Theology desperately need to read and serves as a much-needed reminder that the doctrines we believer are the doctrines of "grace." If our embrace of the doctrines of grace push us in the direction of arrogance, we have not yet understood God's grace accurately.

Should You Pray for God to Save Your Lost Loved Ones?

July 12, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

By Michael Scott Horton

Calvinists hear Arminian friends ask this question all the time. It’s usually intended as a rhetorical question. In other words, it’s really a statement: If you believe that your unbelieving friend is dead in sin until God unilaterally regenerates him or her, and that God has unconditionally chosen whom he will save, then what’s the point? Que sera, sera: Whatever will be, will be.

A healthy church member is a committed church member (What is a healthy church member? Part 7)

June 12, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

I was taken aback by his critique of our church’s leadership: “Church leadership expects us to come to church too much.” This fellow church member confided in me that they were considering leaving our body for another church, one that had services only once a week. “I don’t see anything in Scripture that says we have to go to church three or four times a week,” he said.

The SBC and salvation: a new controversy over an old doctrine

June 08, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

[NOTE: A group of SBC leaders this week released a statement touting what they believe is "the traditional Southern Baptist view" of salvation, which is nothing less than an attack on the doctrines of God's salvation by sovereign grace. Mark No. 6: A healthy church member is a biblical evangelist

May 24, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

For a reason known only to God’s good providence, Christians often target me as a prospect for evangelism. Maybe it’s the hair. My wife and daughters were evangelized this week in the parking lot of a local Wal-Mart. Often, I play the devil’s advocate and make the would-be evangelist earn his keep by answering difficult theological questions, the questions I am typically asked during personal evangelism encounters (What do I need to be saved from? If your God is so good, then why do bad things happen to ‘good’ people?

What is a healthy church member? Part V: A healthy church member is genuinely converted

May 16, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

In a Baptist church with its commitment to believers-only membership, perhaps it should go without saying that a healthy church member is one who is really and truly a follower of Christ whose heart has been changed by the Spirit of God. In the modern-day evangelical church culture, however, this is not necessarily a fact that may be assumed.

Why controversy is sometimes necessary

May 08, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

By. R. Albert Mohler Jr.

I recently watched as a young mother acted quickly and decisively to end a squabble among two preschool boys. She acted righteously and quite effectively, and then she turned to her two charges and set down the law: “It is never right to fight.”

Sorry, Mom, I understand what you were trying to do, but that moral instruction will not serve those boys well as they grow into maturity. Their challenge will be to learn when it is right to fight, and how, as the Bible commands, to fight the good fight of faith.

Tolle Lege: Unveiling Christ in the Old Testament

April 27, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Last Sunday evening, I launched a new teaching series called The Story and the Stories: Unveiling the Gospel in the Old Testament, which is aimed at helping us understand the whole Bible in light of Christ. As promised, I want to recommend a few excellent books that I comment to you as we undertake this study over the summer and into the fall. You will hear each of these books quoted somewhere along the line in this series. I am limiting my recommendations to those books that are non-technical and are written for a lay audience.

What is a healthy church member? Part III: A healthy church member is a biblical theologian

April 24, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

There is a notion that is very strong in most evangelical churches today that serious study of theology and the Bible are best left to the seminary professors and the “religious professionals.” Nothing could be further from the truth. Because, whether you know it or not, you are a theologian. The question is, are you a good theologian? I am convinced that every Christian can and should become an able theologian and scholar of God’s Word, but it takes discipline, commitment and hard work. It is, however, well worth the effort!

Ruminations on T4G: Is my confidence in the Gospel?

April 18, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Both my ordaining council and numerous seminary professors told me it would happen, but I did not believe them. It would not happen to me. After all, I believe the five points of Calvinism, the five solas of the Reformation, hold to the complentary nature of the relationship between husband and wife and the absolute inerrancy, sufficiency and authority of Scripture.

What is the Bible and how should we interpret it? What determines the meaning of the text and can it have more than one meaning? Is the Bible all about Jesus and do the commands of God all apply to believers today? How did we get the books of the Bible?

Rise early and be alone with God: wise counsel from an old divine

March 28, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

William Law (1686-1761) was an English Puritan theologian best known for writing works in the category of practical divinity, a category to which we refer today as “Christian living” or “devotional literature.” His most famous work was a classic titled A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life. In it, he argues strenuously that the best way for a Christian to begin his day is to rise very early and spent the first hours in prayer and Scripture meditation.

March Madness, Athletic Achievement, and Christians in Competitive Sports

March 26, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

[Note:  The Following post is from the Desiring God Blog and was written by Matt Reagan. It is an excellent reflection on sports and Christianity, two subjects near and dear to many in the body at PBC. I think you will find it helpful.--Jeff]

Tolle Lege: The magnum opus on biblical manhood and womanhood

March 23, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

If you have only one resource in your library on gender issues from a biblical perspective, this work should be it: Recovering Biblical Manhood and Womanhood (Crossway), co-edited by CBMW
leaders Wayne Grudem and John Piper.

What is a healthy church member? Part II: A healthy church member is an expositional listener

March 20, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Back from a week at the beach rested, rejuvenated and ready to return to the front lines of war! (Remember, that’s my operative analogy for the Christian life and ministry in the local church) Today, we return to the second in a 10-part series answering the question “What is a healthy church member?” I am basing this series on the excellent book by Thabiti Anyabwile by the same title.

Changes in latitude: PBC blog on vacation until March 20

March 13, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

My family is enjoying God's creation and some much-needed R&R at Orange Beach this week. I will be taking a sabbath rest from blogging as well this week. The PBC blog will return next Monday, March 19, hopefully with a fresh, well-rested perspective.

Tolle Lege: God-centered evangelism expertly modeled in A Pastor's Sketches

March 09, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

There are more books presently available on the subject of evangelism than at perhaps any time in the history of the church but virtually none that provide a theologically sound approach to dealing with "anxious souls concerning the way of salvation."

Out of the rubble: Courageous motherhood

March 07, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

In John 15:13, our Lord Jesus Christ told His disciples, "Greater love has no man than this: that he lay down his life for his friends." Jesus uttered these words, of course, during the final week of His life. A few days later, Christ would provide the world with the most profound illustration in history of the power of redeeming love as he went to Calvary and the old rugged cross.

A delightful home: The hospitality of Martin and Katie Luther

February 20, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

[NOTE: Below is an excellent summary on the daily life in the home of the great reformer Martin Luther. It was written by Justin Taylor and appears on his blog today. The Luthers were an excellent model of the Christ-saturated home. May it please God to raise up more hospitable, godly homes in the mold of Martin and Katie Luther! --CJR]

Tolle Lege: The Book of Man

February 17, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Author Bill Bennett is certainly correct when he writes, "There is no simple instruction manual or formula on how to be a man, but there is experience and wisdom to be consulted." But Bennett, former Secretary of Education in the 1980s under late President Ronald Reagan, provided a new resource that ought to be consulted by men who are grappling to learn for themselves or teach their sons about genuine, godly manhood.

Girl Scouts and the Feminist Agenda

February 08, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Cathy Cleaver Ruse of the Family Research Council recently wrote a compelling opinion piece on the Girl Scouts that might make desires think twice before buying those Girl Scout cookies this year. Published in the Washington Times last month, the article points out a number of disturbing links between the Girl Scouts and left-wing organizations such as Planned Parenthood. Below is the lead paragraph and a link to the entire article:

Tolle Lege: Fathers, have you had "the talk" with your sons?

January 27, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Steve Zollos's new book, Time for the Talk: Leading Your Son into True Manhood (Shepherd's Press), is a very helpful and unique resource for those of us who are raising sons. There are many whom this describes among our congregation at PBC.

An excellent new theological mag online

January 19, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

An excellent new theological magazine, Credo, made its debut in December, edited by my dear friends at Southern Seminary. I will be contributing historical and theological articles every other month and my article on John Calvin and evangelism (really, it's just a preview of my forthcoming book with Michael Haykin).

Does God Care if Tim Tebow Wins?

January 13, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

[Editor's note: Does God care if Tim Tebow wins? Those of us who prize God's sovereignty should have a very different answer to that question than the secular media. My friend and former SBTS colleague Owen Strachan gives an excellent answer to that question below. Follow the link to read the entire artice. Tolle Lege will move to a bi-weekly Friday schedule.--CJR]

Research confirms timeless truth: Men and women are different

January 10, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

A science journal has uncovered a fact that God's Word has been telling the world since the creation account in Genesis 1:27: men and woman are different. With a tone that borders on startled, the London Telegraph reports the findings of research conducted by the Public Library of Science One:

Resolution for a new year: Sell all and buy Christ, Part II

January 04, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Resolution for a new year: Sell all and buy Christ

January 03, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

NOTEBelow is the first part of the sermon I preached on Sunday night in which I set forth my resolution for myself and the body at PBC for 2012. I encourage every member to access the audio and listen to this vital message. As I told the body, this resolution has been mine each year for the past 12 years or so. Tomorrow, I will post the application section which, as I made clear to those in attendance, was borrowed largely from John Piper's monumental book Don't Waste Your Life.--CJR

One father's guide to watching bowl games

January 02, 2012 by Dr. Jeff Robinson
[NOTE: Following is my annual post on CBMW's Gender Blog on a father's duties to guard his family's hearts during the college football bowl season.]

At the risk of sounding like one who has missed the real meaning of Christmas, I have to admit that one of my favorite aspects of the holiday season is the presence of myriads of important (or pseudo-important if your team wound up in the Weedeater Bowl) football games.

[Editor's note: Below is the Christmas e-mail I sent to the body yesterday. Please note that since I am traveling next week, I will not resume blogging again until Jan. 1 or 2. Tolle Lege will return on Jan. 6. Please pray for my family as we travel to Georgia to visit family. May God be glorified in your homes as you meditate upon the Incarnation during this Advent season.--CJR]

Porn and its Deadly Effects on Women

December 21, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

I have heard some radical feminists reply to the question “Why don’t you oppose pornography, given that it objectifies, abuses and undermines the dignity of women?” with a deeply troubling answer that goes something like this: “We do not oppose it because pornography gives women the opportunity to gain power over men by exploiting their susceptibility to carnal attraction to women.”

Tolle Lege: Fathers and Sons Stand Fast Upon God's Word

Sin: The "ungoding" of God

December 14, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Some in the congregation have inquired about the book The Sinfulness of Sin, by Puritan Ralph Venning which I quoted and alluded to in my sermon on Sunday. Below is an excellent insight from Venning's work on sin as "the ungoding of God."

Genderless schools in Sweden: Coming soon to the USA?

December 12, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

For those so interested, I have written a new post on CBMW's Gender Blog this morning on a disturbing development in Sweden: the push for genderless schools. Government-supported schools there are being encouraged to create a gender-free atmosphere in a sinful denial of God's truth that echo the words of the serpent in Eden: "Has God really said?" What is happening in Sweden is sad beyond belief.

Have you forgotten the outrageous mercy of the cross?

December 08, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Charles Spurgeon bemoaned the churches of 19th century England as being spiritual malnourished and he cited one reason as the main cause that had left the congregations in a state of atrophy: cross apathy. That is, the cross was no longer being taught, preached, sung or meditated upon in local congregations.

Buyer beware: Star wars video game goes gay

December 05, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

The December edition of Focus on the Family’s Citizen magazine reports on a troubling development in the realm of video games: a new Star Wars game will include gay characters after succumbing to pressure from homosexual advocates. So let parents pay close attention to what online games their children are playing and what they are buying them for Christmas. A game that seems innocuous and safe may in fact be a Trojan horse. Below is the news brief from Citizen in its entirety:

Tolle Lege: Gospel-Powered Humility

December 02, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

One of the most sobering verses in all of Scripture is a passage that appears twice in the New Testament, in James 4:6 and 1 Peter 5:5: God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” That should be a downright scary admonition to all of us for at least two reasons: first, it promises that God will oppose all who are prideful and second, humility is an utterly impossible attainment for the sons of Adam unless God works His

Does Calvinism make God a moral monster?

November 22, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Do the doctrines of grace turn God into a moral monster? Unfortunately many in the church and outside think it does. Follow the links below to read Michael Horton's excellent response to this charge. The article is taken from Justin Taylor's blog:

How to articulate a Christian worldview in four easy steps

November 21, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

One of the most important aspects of developing a Christian mind is the ability to "put the pieces together" regarding a comprehensive biblical worldview. Kevin DeYoung, one of my favorite young evangelical writers, helps us to think this way. Follow the link below to his helpful post.

Love him or hate him, Calvin is a towering figure on the landscape of history

Bullying curriculum bullish in opposing gender roles

October 18, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

The Southern Poverty Law Center wants our elementary school students to think about gender roles and the liberal civil rights group has gone so far as to develop a curriculum to facilitate such thinking. Titled “Gender Doesn’t Limit You,” the lessons are designed to flatten gender distinctions and teach children that, at the end of the day, boys are girls are exactly alike.

Should Pastors Perform Marriages for Cohabitating Couples?

October 12, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

It is the question every pastor will eventually face: what is the propriety of marrying a cohabitating couple? When the search committee from PBC interviewed me last winter, it was one of the questions I had to answer. Wisely, the committee knew that my answer to that question spoke volumes about my view of both marriage and sexuality.

Tolle Lege ("Take up and read"): Reformation books you must read

October 07, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Asking the question “How important was the Protestant Reformation?” is a little like wondering if perhaps the printing press revolutionized communication.

Interview with Paul David Tripp, Part 2

October 05, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Paul Tripp is the president of Paul Tripp Ministries, a nonprofit organization, whose mission statement is "Connecting the transforming power of Jesus Christ to everyday life." He is on the pastoral staff at Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, Pa., where he preaches on Sunday evenings and leads the ministry to Center City.  Below is the second part of an interview I did with Tripp in 2009 in Louisville. In the second part, I asked Dr. Tripp about gender, gender roles and teaching children about them.

Interview with Paul David Tripp, Part I

September 29, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

[Editor's note: Below is an interview I conducted with Paul David Tripp a couple of years ago while at Southern Seminary. In our fall Sunday school class on sanctification, we are using Dr. Tripp's excellent book, How People Change and this past summer we used his War of Words. Our ladies Bible study on Wednesday evenings is using his work Instruments in the Redeemer's Hands, so PBC is getting well acquainted with Dr.

Friday's Tolle Lege: Mohler on the new atheism

September 22, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Since I am writing this week's book recommendation from the campus of my alma mater, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, I think it only fitting to recommend one of President Mohler's excellent books. His 2008 book Atheism Remix presents a concise but powerful summary and refutation of the so-called new atheism of Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins and others. This would be an especially helpful book to recommend to college students, particularly those who are attending non-Christian colleges.

Masculine amnesia: Did we learn anything about manhood from 9/11?

September 21, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

When it comes to the nature of man (I have a terrible problem and it is inside of me) and the necessary solution (unilateral grace must come from outside of me), country music usually gets it right. (For more on this, see Russell D.

Ninth Mark of a Healthy Church: Biblical Leadership

We now reach the ninth and final mark of a healthy church and draw this occasional series to a close that began last spring when I arrived here as pastor of PBC.

Courageous hits theaters Sept. 30

September 12, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

[NOTEThe following post ran last week on CBMW's Gender Blog and provides an overview of the movie Courageous which the men of PBC will attend on the film's opening night for our first "guys night out." All fathers and future fathers are encouraged to attend. September 11, 2001: Where was God?

September 09, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

In the days, weeks and months following the tragedy now simply labeled 9/11, the inevitable question came from the pundits; it came often and it more times than not, the tone was shrill: Where was God when those jets were hurtling into two skyscrapers, the Pentagon and a field in rural Pennsylvania?

September 11, 2001 and the cross of Christ

September 08, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

I was preparing to take my late-morning breakfast and return to my office from the seminary commissary when I heard the news, which seemed inconsequential at first, from the man who took my money and made change at the register: a small plane had bumped into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York. “Probably some nutty pilot who steered his Cessna off-course,” I thought.

Tolle Lege: Five foundational books on biblical manhood and womanhood

September 02, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Someone recently asked me, "If I were going to read some books on biblical manhood and womanhood to get a feel for the Bible's teaching and the current debate, where should I start?" Today's edition of Tolle Lege seeks to answer that question. Following are five landmark books that will flesh out the Bible's teaching on gender, manhood and womanhood and related issues such as sexuality, the family and gender roles in the home and church.

Theology on the Net: A Brief Guided Tour

September 01, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

I am amazed at how many excellent theology websites there are on the Internet. When I first began studying theology seriously 15 or so years ago, the web was in its infant stage and there were few stops for sound doctrine on the information superhighway. Today, if one is disciplined in his use of time, it is possible to gain a deep and wide theological education by reading blogs, listening to sermons and lectures and reading books available free on the Internet.

[Editor's note: Below is the outline from Sunday night's teaching on the PBC confessional article on Baptism and and Covenant Theology. It provdes an outline of the historic Baptist version of Covenant Theology along with the main points of Covenant Theology from a paedobaptist (infant baptism) perspective]

Introduction

Tolle Lege: J.C. Ryle's classic on the Christian Life

August 26, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Today's Friday book recommendation in our new weekly feature Tolle Lege (Latin for "Take up and read") is one of the finest works ever written on sanctification and the Christian life, J.C. Ryle's Holiness. I read this book through each year and God has used its biblical content to affect great transformation in my walk with God.

Favorite Books: The Big 10 and Then Some

August 25, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Several times during my first few months here at PBC, I have been asked to name my top 10 favorite books, not counting the Bible. This is not an easy task as I have blessed to be profoundly shaped by many, many great books over the years. So, following is my top 10, counting down from 10 to one, plus a list of books that make honorable mention (which is only fitting in a region that will soon become deeply concerned about a weekly poll listing the nation’s top college football teams!)

Reading Widely and Wisely, Part I

August 23, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

In the last post, I argued that God expects His people to be a reading people, given the fact that He has revealed Himself in a book. But how should we approach our books? Should we read every book comprehensively and analytically? Do some books demand a greater commitment from the reader and other less? I definitely think every reader should exercise discernment because most of us have only so much time to read.

Eighth mark of a healthy church: Biblical discipleship and growth

August 17, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

For the church in which I spent much of my youth, the notion of discipleship went something like this: “Now that you are saved, your primary mission is to get others saved.” That was it. That was the sum total of what I was taught about discipleship.

Interview: A guide to biblical manhood

August 10, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Below is an excellent interview by Boundless magazine with Randy Stinson and Dan Dumas, co-authors of the book PBC's men will soon have in their hands, A Guide to Biblical Manhood. This is a timely interview in light of my sermon last Sunday on the Gospel-driven home. Stinson serves as president of The Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood. Dumas serves as an administrator and professor at my alma mater, Southern Seminary.

Seventh mark of a healthy church: Discipline

August 03, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

In his Manual of Church Order, John L. Dagg (1794-1884), Southern Baptists’ first writing theologian, famously wrote, “When discipline leaves a church, Christ goes with it.” Indeed. Church discipline has fallen upon hard times in Southern Baptist churches over the past 100 years.

Sixth mark of a healthy church: a biblical understanding of membership

July 28, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Where does the idea of church membership come from? Is there a verse in the New Testament which details precisely how the early church received new members into its congregation? Not exactly, but there is much evidence in the New Testament that the early church kept membership rolls, providing plentiful evidence that churches in 2011 should do likewise.

Believer beware: NIV 2011 translates feminist assumptions into biblical text

July 26, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Not all English Bible translations are created equal. When choosing a Bible for your devotional reading, your regular study and your Scripture memorization, it is helpful to know that translation teams take one of two fundamental approaches to rendering God’s Word from Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic into English:

Fifth Mark of a Healthy Church: A Biblical Understanding of Evangelism

July 18, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

I am in the midst of co-writing a book on the great 16th century reformer John Calvin in which Michael Haykin and I are arguing that Calvin’s desire to see the church reformed according to the Scriptures was fundamentally motivated by a strong evangelistic impulse. As Christians who stand in Calvin's stream theology, our hearts should beat similarly out of a deep, deep concern for the lost all around us.

Modesty: What is God's Standard? Part II

July 13, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

By Dr. Ed Wallen

The same principle applies to men’s dress. Most every advertisement you see on television is cloaked in sexual innuendo or sexually oriented visuals and messages; sexually oriented dress for men and women draws more attention to themselves than to the product they are advertising. This is immodesty. No standard – no shame.

[Note: Below is the first part of a two-part post by Dr. Ed Wallen on modesty. This is always an issue facing the church and an area that is often under emphasized, yet it is an important aspect of sanctification for both men and women in the body of Christ--CJR]

Fourth mark of a healthy church: A biblical understanding of sin and conversion

June 22, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

In a good and somewhat humorous providence, I have often found myself the target of street evangelism. This typically seems to happen when I am traveling for ministry purposes. Often, I will have a bit of fun with the evangelist by questioning them as if I were an atheist or an agnostic, a person utterly hostile to God and absolute truth claims.

Where Have all the Fathers Gone? A Sobering Challenge for Dads

June 16, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

Like many Christians, I love to listen to sermons and lectures while driving from place to place in the car. Only eternity will tell how deeply God has changed me through the means of hundreds of hours of preaching and teaching by godly men such as R.C. Sproul, John Piper, John MacArthur, Al Mohler, James Kennedy, Paul Tripp, Mark Dever, Tom Schreiner, Al Martin, Adrian Rogers (greatest preaching voice ever!), Alistair Begg, James Dobson and scores of other faithful Gospel ministers.

A Confessional Church, Parts I and II

June 14, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

A few members of the PBC family asked me to post the outlines and notes from the first two installments of our confession of faith which I am teaching through on Sunday evenings. Below is both the outline from week one, which was an overview of and positive argument in favor of confessionalism and from week two, last Sunday evening's teaching on Article I: Scripture.

Part II: Sunday evening, June 12.

I offer it for your consideration in light of my new Sunday evening series on PBC's confession of faith. We will examine our confession's first article, "Scripture," this Sunday evening at 6 p.m. I hope the following article, though somewhat lengthy, will help establish some of the issues surrounding the sufficiency and authority of God's Word.]

Third mark of a healthy church: A biblical understanding of the Gospel

June 06, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

What is the Gospel? If you had to articulate the Gospel in 200 words or less, could you do it without missing any of the key elements? What about in the scope of 50 words? While it’s not important to put a word count on a summary of the Gospel, it is absolutely vital that members of a local church be clear and full in their understanding of the good news of God’s redeeming love in Christ Jesus. I strongly agree with Mark Dever’s words on this point:

Gender in the news: Court affirms Bible; boy named homecoming queen

June 03, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

(Editor's note: In case you're wondering why me and my friends at CBMW are so concerned about the biblical perspective on gender issues, particularly when we are involved in churches and a denomination that have men serving as pastors and encourages men to lead in the home, please read my post below that was published on CBMW's Gender Blog yesterday. Brothers and sisters, this is a front-line issue facing the church. I think you will agree--JR)

I felt it appropriate to publish here on Memorial Day. I hope all of you are having a relaxing time with your family today. Remember those who have sacrificed that we may be free to worship our sovereign Lord and also that greatest of all battles won on Calvary so we might be free from sin and death.)

Biblical Manhood Amid the Rubble

Introducing: CBMW

May 25, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

In these early days of my ministry here, many of you have heard me talk about an organization with which I have been affiliated as a writer and teacher for nearly a decade: The Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood or simply, CBMW. I serve as a writer and editor for the ministry (particularly its weblog “Genderblog” at www.cbmw.org/blog) and I also occasionally teach seminars in local churches on biblical manhood and womanhood across the U.S.

What is a healthy church? Part I

April 25, 2011 by Dr. Jeff Robinson

I was shocked when he told me that his family was leaving our church and even more taken back when he gave me the reason for the departure: “Our pastor seems to worship the Bible,” he said. “All he talks about is how the music and the youth ministry and the Sunday school and the small groups and everything else has to be biblical. Why tie yourself to a book that is thousands of years old when modern culture has a lot of positive things to off that will keep church interesting.
