Looking at the lives of men and women that God has used throughout history is a treasure chest of instruction and encouragement for the Christian. On the fourth Sunday night of each month Pastor Barry and Dr. Wallen will bring a series of biograpical studies on some of the greatest men in the history of the church.
We will begin with a look at John Newton, renowned pastor, theologian and hymn writer of the 18th Century. You probably know John New as the author of the most recognized hymn in the world, "Amazing Grace." The main source for this first study will be the biography, John Newton, From Disgrace to Amazing Grace written by Jonathan Aitken.
The following comments were written about this great man, John Newton.
"Even more amazing than Newton's life with all its drama and color is the reminder of how completely revolutionary is God's agenda to change the world his own way and through imperfect, broken people. Newton is just another entry to God's long resume of his amazing grace in changed lives" - James McDonald
"Only God could take a vile slave trader and turn him into a useful instrument in abolishing the slave trace and igniting a gospel revival, the flames of which are burning still. the story of Newton's life inspires all who seek to follow the path of Jesus today." - Dr. Timothy George
Come join us each fourth Sunday evening as we take a trip back in history to see how Christ took frail condemned sinners and transformed them into trophies of His sovereign grace and mercy. With hearts aflame for Christ their preaching set fires in teh dead hearts of men, the Gospel swept through nations, and their voicesstill speak to those who take the time to hear.
To aid our monthly "Grace Portraits Series" Pastor Barry is providing short sketches, at the beginning of each month, for parents and PBC children's workers. Please use them devotionally with the children. Also included are application questions and a recommended book.
