FAMILY PROFILE: Ashlei & Graham

Our story starts several hundred miles apart - Ashlei is from Birmingham and Graham is from North Carolina. Ashlei grew up attending PBC while living in Cahaba Heights, and went to college at the University of Alabama, where she majored in Nursing. Graham attended college at the University of North Carolina and majored in biology. We both moved to East Asia shortly after college and ministered on two different campuses in the same general area. We got married in 2006 and immediately returned to our assignment and have been working steadily there ever since. In the summer of 2008 we had a baby boy who continues to be a delight to us and is fascinating to all the Asians that we live around.

OUR WORK - Student Evangelism & Discipleship

As you may have guessed from our sending organization's name, we are associated primarily with the college campus and reaching out to college students. Campus Crusade places small staff teams on universities all over the world, and we are one small part of that larger picture - working to expose as many students on our target campus as possible to the gospel. Ashlei worked on such a staff team at the University of Alabama for two years after graduation and then transferred her assigment to East Asia, having felt a burden to bring the gospel to students there. Graham left for East Asia on a one-year program right after graduating from college, and one year turned into two, then two turned into "long-term," which is where we are now, long-term and holding steady.

For both of us, college was to be the place where our faith was tested and it was going to be the place where a crucial decision was made: "Am I going to seriously walk with God and follow Him?" We feel like the Lord has called us to work with college students, and has called us to meet with them in this critical stage in life when they are wrestling with questions about their own faith and future. In the country where we live, Jesus is not a commonly heard or understood name, and everyone is taught to "believe in themselves" for success in life. Week-in and week-out, our staff team spends time meeting students, starting friendships, and starting conversations about spiritual things. We then seek to share with them the hope that we have in Jesus. Our hope is that more and more students would see the futuility of "trusting in themselves," and would put their trust in Jesus!
